Debating
For the past number of years Scoil Eoin Baiste have taken part in the Concern Debating Competition. All children are familiar with the persuasive writing genre from a young age in Scoil Eoin Baiste and by the time the pupils reach 5th & 6th class they are well ready to become involved in a debating competition.
Once the class receive their motion they brainstorm, carry out research and finally fine tune their arguments. The delivering of the debate throughout the debating competitions are an excellent tool in assisting children develop confidence, encourage clear speaking and strong communication skills. Another important element of the competition is listening to the other teams arguments and forming counter arguments in the form of rebuttals and including these in their speeches as the competition is running. This really encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity on the spot as it teaches the children to explain and support their ideas, promotes teamwork, respectful listening and an appreciation of different viewpoints.
We are excited about taking part in this year's competition and we are kicking of with a practise debate versus Holy Family National School, Ballyshannon on January 27th.
The motion for this debate is " Weekends should be 3 days long" with Scoil Eoin Baiste opposing the motion.
