Sensory Room

A sensory room was set up in Scoil Eoin Baiste in 2018.  In our sensory room, we aim to engage as many senses as possible with soft colour changing lighting, relaxing music, tactile materials and soft seating. All children are welcome to ask to use the sensory room if they feel it is necessary.

What are the advantages of having a Sensory Room in a school?

As well as being inclusive of children with various abilities in the school, our sensory room provides sanctuary, relief, and a space to reflect and relax.

Sensory rooms can be used to enhance learning in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the child using the space. For example, a sensory room can be used as an alternative learning space to increase concentration or improve communication.

Alternatively, the space can be used for children to take time out, regulate emotions and then return to school activities in a better frame of mind for learning.

Computer Room: Our computer suite was set up in the summer of 2017 and all classes visit the computer room each week.  The computer room is also used by a lunchtime Coding Club.

Outdoor Classroom: An Outdoor Classroom has just been built in the school grounds of Scoil Eoin Baiste.  This classroom was built to extend the learning opportunities of the children in the school and assist them in engaging in creative and investigative learning. We recognise that not every child learns whilst sitting at a table in the classroom. An outdoor classroom provides a relaxed space, fresh air and sensory stimulation necessary for all children and especially those with special educational needs to access the school curriculum. There has never been a better time to learn outdoors with the Covid-19 pandemic in our midst and the benefits of children being outdoors has never been so important.

School Grounds: We are very fortunate to have an abundance of space around our school, both grass and tarmaced areas.  Our junior classes use the great outdoors every week during Aistear.

We are very excited about the development of a community astro-pitch at the back of the school.  Mevagh Sports Ground is hoping to get moving in 2021 and with the involvement of Scoil Eoin Baiste we will have access to this state of the art pitch every day.

Sensory Path

We have just put a sensory path in place.

Why have we done this?

In classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds around the country, distracted students are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from regaining focus, say teachers who have created sensory paths to give students a quick brain break.
