Science Blast 2026

6th May 2026

A wonderful day was had by all at this year's ESB Science Blast in the ICC Belfast.

The 6th class pupils are working on a project based on Sustainable Growing.  The pupils wanted to grow fruit and vegetables without using pesticides to keep insects away and improve plant growth as they had carried out research on the dangers associated with the use of pesticides.  The class decided on fruit and vegetable plants that they would like to grow.  They researched the pests that are attracted and eat these plants and followed on from this by investigating what plants these pest don't like to eat.  Having done this, the pupils would grow these plants as Companion Plants and surround the fruit and vegetables they are growing.

The plants have been growing with their companions in the school polytunnel for 3 weeks with success.  The pupils will monitor the condition of each plant and whether or not pests are visable on the fruit and vegetables.

We all enjoyed a great day in Belfast at the ESB Science Blast where the children were judged on their project and asked questions.  Fantastic feedback was given by the judge and we look forward to hopefully witnessing a healthy growing season ahead.
